Lake Mungo och Walls of China.
Willandraregionen med bl a Lake Mungos nationalpark består till stora delar av ett sjösystem som torkade ut för ca: 12 000 år sedan.
Här finns det gamla lämningar efter Aboriginal people som levde här långt innan sjöarna torkade ut vilket naturligtvis gör Lake Mungo intressant för arkeologer.
“The Willandra Lakes region was given World Heritage listing in 1981 because of its special archaeological and geomorphologic features:
· Human skeletal material, tools, shell middens and animal bones provide some of the oldest evidence of modern humans (Homo sapiens) in the world.
· Landforms and sediments recording events of the Pleistocene Epoch are relatively undisturbed.
· Baked sediments from un-eroded fireplaces record the direction of the earth's magnetic field at the time the fire was in use. About 31,000 years ago, the north-south axis moved 120 degrees from its present position and returned again over several thousand years. This is known as the 'Mungo excursion”
